The Alice Smith School offers an outstanding British education for a successful international future
Established in 1946, the Alice Smith School is the oldest and most prestigious British international school in Asia and offers the English National Curriculum. It has an established reputation for excellence, and as a not-for-profit educational foundation, all the school’s resources are focused on the well-being of students.
The school was started by Mrs Alice Smith at her home in Jalan Eaton, Kuala Lumpur, in 1946. At the end of World War II, Mrs Smith started teaching her own daughter, then her neighbours’ children and soon attracted the children of other expatriates. When she left Malaya for Australia in 1950, the parents of the school’s students formally incorporated the Alice Smith Schools Association. The founding student body, comprising British, Irish, New Zealand, and Australian nationals, was later joined by children of all nationalities. With close to 50 nationalities currently on roll, the school offers an exceptional combination of a British education delivered within a truly international community. Having existed for close to 70 years, the school has a rich web of alumni globally.
One of the first schools in Malaysia and earliest in Southeast Asia and wider afield to be accredited as a British School Overseas by the Department for Education in London, the Alice Smith School again passed a recent inspection with flying colours and continues to be accredited as an outstanding school.
The school is also a member of FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia), COBIS (Council of British International Schools), ISC (Independent Schools Council), EARCOS (East Asia Region Council of Schools), and CIS (Council of International Schools).
The School resides on two campuses. The Primary Campus caters to students from Pre-school to Year 6 in the city centre, while the beautiful purpose-built Secondary Campus in Equine Park situated on 25 acres of land caters to students from Years 7 to 13 and offers GCSEs and A Levels.
Today, each one of the 1,600 students enjoys the same level of personal dedication, inspiration, and student focused learning accorded by Mrs Smith in 1946. The enriched and challenging curriculum offered at the school not only stimulates students to acquire knowledge but also provides the opportunity to develop higher level skills in thinking, problem solving and communication, maximising the potential of every learner.
At the Alice Smith School, students are provided with an outstanding British education focusing on six learner attributes, developing them to be happy and healthy, respectful, community minded, independent learners, communicators, and problem solvers. Students are treated as individuals and are motivated to excel, preparing them for a successful international future.
