When Paul Chua took over this charming corner-lot café in Plaza Damas in early 2012, it didn’t take him long to decide he wanted to make a change. So in May of last year, he shuttered the eatery and completely refurbished it, giving it a fresh new look and a bold new concept.
 

Initially not fond of the name, Paul realised that the café’s moniker, A Minor Place, had an acronym that also reflected the names of his wife, his daughter, and himself, so he kept it, but with a twist: now, you’ll see numerous house special menu items with the “AMP” designation. A subtle rebranding effort, but one with an interesting story behind it!

The café opens early and serves up a popular range of breakfast items, such as an American breakfast, a delectable French toast dish with caramelized bananas, maple syrup, and smoked bacon (and that’s real bacon, mind you… pork features notably on the AMP menu!). The popular and aptly named “Big Breakfast” features bread with butter and jam, scrambled eggs, German bratwurst, strips of crispy bacon, mushrooms, grilled tomato, baked beans, and a glass of chilled OJ. That’ll get your day going.

During the workweek, AMP features a marvellous buffet aimed squarely at the value-conscious lunch patron. From noon to 2.30pm, a scant RM9.50nett gets you platefuls of fried rice, pasta, veggies, and a fresh rotation of meat dishes. It’s got to be one of the best deals in town, and you can top it all off with an iced lemon tea for only RM1.50.

The atmosphere is inviting and relaxing, and this is an easy place to chill out with friends and enjoy whatever’s on offer. Daily specials and promos feature prominently here, and are tantalisingly supplemented by the happy hour deals that are, on their own, worth coming for. Seven days a week, from 5.30 to 8.30pm, AMP serves up frosty mugs with bottles of cold beers such as Tiger, Strongbow, Kilkenny, and more, at rock-bottom prices. Their bottles of Paulaner – a particularly enjoyable German brew – might just be among the cheapest in town. (If you’re partial to coffees or fresh juices, AMP offers a range of Illy coffee beverages and a great selection of juices and blends, too.)

So come for the beer, but stay on for the terrific food. Favourites include the juicy pork burger, a creamy bacon-laced carbonara pasta, smoked salmon salad, fish and chips, and a pork chop dish that is a wonder to behold. An ample portion, juicy and succulent, served up with potato wedges, baked beans, a veggie mélange, and a side of applesauce. When this thing landed on our table, we all just marvelled at the size of the chop and its artful presentation. Needless to say, the taste didn’t disappoint, either.

This is definitely a café worth seeking out. Great prices, tasty food, and a laid-back contemporary feel with friendly service make A Minor Place a restaurant with a decidedly major appeal.
