For the first time under Op Selamat (a campaign in Malaysia focusing on overall security during festive seasons), traffic police will be stationed near certain toll booths and rest areas on the North-South Expressway to manage traffic flow.
Aside from the regular patrolling, the police will also be setting up observation canopies and cameras near the danger zones. According to a statement by Police Chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan to the New Straits Times, police presence at these spots are meant to forewarn road users to slow down and take extra precaution. “The public should be extra careful while driving through these areas, especially at night,” he said.
According to the Chief, traffic tends to bottleneck at several entry and exit points on the highway, such as Simpang Pulai, Changkat Jering and Kuala Kangsar. The police on duty will help to alternate traffic and prevent long hold-ups caused by the bottleneck jam and from those who double park along the road near toll booths and rest areas like in Tapah and Sungai Perak.
An important point to note, several traffic lights near highway exits will be flashing amber starting 15 August. This is because traffic police will be on the road to help man traffic.
Perak will not be the only state where the police will be on patrol. In fact, police and traffic police will be on duty all over Malaysia to ensure there are no accidents, traffic congestions and also to patrol crime hotspots. They will also patrol neighbourhoods to prevent any break-ins.
