With all the recent reporting’s of ‘smash and grab’ robbery cases, more and more people are taking precautions by installing security shatter-proof tints for their car windows.
According to a report in The Star newspaper, tinting manufacturers and distributors reported a sudden rise in sales for the polyester films that prevent the windows from shattering. And most of the motorist who paid for this tinting are female drivers.
The Star also reports that these special tinting films are priced from RM600 and RM1,000 per car. The price depends on the quality and thickness of the tinting.
Please be aware that these tinting does not mean that your car window will not break in the event of a smash and grab robbery. Instead, the security films will ensure that it takes a longer time for your car window to break, because the film sheet actually absorbs the vibrations and will hold the glass together longer. This will give you enough time to react.
The report states that the glass breaking depends on the kind of weapon used. For example, a hammer would take about three or four hits to show cracks, while a helmet would need much more hits.
According to police statistics, smash and grab robbery cases make up part of the 319 cases of snatch thefts recorded between May and June this year.
