Fake Malaysian Notes Circulating in Malacca

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Traders, locals and tourist in Malacca have become victims of counterfeit notes of RM50 and RM100.

Some traders have, according to The Star, incurred losses amounting to RM20, 000 each since early this year.

The Star also reported that a businessman had a police report lodged against him when he recently deposited RM13, 000 into his bank account. The reason being that RM1000 out of the full amount were fake notes bearing the same serial number.

Many shop owners have lodged reports after receiving counterfeit notes from locals and tourist.

Technology has apparently made it easier for frauds to produce counterfeit notes. A computer, scanner and printer are all they need.

BUT, some details such as lines and patterns, microprints and the small embedded strip in the genuine notes are not visible in the counterfeit notes.

The best way to detect the fake notes is by using UV (ultra-violet) money detectors, a method commonly used by banks and commercial centres.

The matter is being investigated by the police at the moment. Until it has been solved, expats and locals are advised to be extra cautious, especially when accepting RM50 and RM100 notes.
