There is nothing more satisfying than to spend your Friday night sipping on your favourite beverage while having a good laugh after a week of keeping your nose to the grindstone.  And let’s face it we all could use a break from all the political scandals and religious hoo-has that have been plaguing this country. Thanks to the outstanding local acts like Harith Iskander, Jason Leong, Kuah Jenhan, Kavin Jayaram and Douglas Lim, the Malaysian comedy scene has been flourishing and gaining a foothold in the night entertainment scene like never before; more venues have popped up in recent years offering home-grown comedians outlets to practice their craft and comedy fans the chance to load up on endorphins. So it isn’t surprising that these stand-up venues have seen top local comics as well as big names from around the world performing to a sold-out crowd.

The next time you need to get a dose of rib cracking laughter, check out these stand-up comedy venues that we’ve compiled. Whip out your oxygen mask and get ready to hear some rambunctious wisecracks!

1. Live House KL@TREC

From a full bar and food service to live music and comedy shows, this entertainment one stop centre has everything you need.  Located in KL’s hottest entertainment district, TREC, the two-story Live House hosts live music on the ground floor and stand-up comedy shows at LOL on the top floor. Portraits of comedy legends like Robin Williams, Lucille Ball, and Charlie Chaplin grace the walls of LOL as a testament to their dedication and commitment to the art. Since it was founded in 2009, LOL has organised numerous live comedy shows that featured both local and international acts.

The kitchen is run by the founders of KGB, so it isn’t surprising that it is also the holy grail of burgers and quesadillas.
It will be quite a challenge trying not to choke on those delicious foods while being tickled blue by some of the acts around.

2. Crackhouse Comedy Club, TTDI 

The Crackhouse Comedy Club was founded in 2014 by resident crack dealers Rizal Van Geyzel and Shankar Santhiram. With the tagline ‘Making Malaysia laugh again’, Crackhouse Comedy Club was the first club in Malaysia. solely dedicated to comedy. They hosts four shows a week and had featured international headliners such as Paul Ogata, Tamer Kattan and Tom Rhodes as well as a parade of top Malaysian comics.

If you prefer to catch some fresh acts in action, drop by the club on Wednesdays for the Open Mic night and Open Crack! night. Thursday nights are reserved for Bahahasa ‘Stendap Komedi’, Hack The Crack! and AiiA Improv, while Fridays and Saturdays feature International comic acts. Prices of foods and drinks here are pretty wallet friendly and the menu bears cheeky names that intrigue you enough to want to order them such as Omputeh Spesel and Tiunasing!. The shows start at 9.00 pm and end at 10.30 pm with a 10-minute break/intermission so you can take a breather and gear up for the next round of laughter.

3. PJ Live Arts Centre

Since it was founded in 2009, this performing arts centre has gained a strong foothold for shows and events in the performing arts genre. It has also become one of the most sought after stand-up comedy spaces in the country, hosting some of most iconic comedy shows the country has ever seen such as the Comedy Club KL, the M.A.C.C (The Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians), the Cantus Musicus, Gardner & Wife Theatre as well as the Sutra Dance Theatre. If you’re a die-hard fan of stand-up comedy, do not miss their signature annual event called the Laugh Fest. There are plenty of watering holes just a block over, so there is very little chance  you will be getting your jollies on stone cold sober.

4. Laughing Gas@AMPM Café

Laughing Gas at AMPM Cafe may be a newcomer in the stand-up sphere, but it has never failed to get the audience roaring with laughter. Formerly hosted by Morning Wood Café, the show not only gives you the chance to catch some of the funniest seasoned comics around, but also to intimately experience stand-up comedy as some of the fresh faces performs for the very first time. Laughing gas is also one of the few comedy shows that feature a mixture of Chinese and English comedy.

The food and drinks at AMM Café have been receiving rave reviews particularly their All-day Breakfast selection and the Soft Shell Crab Burger. They also serve both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks. So while you’re there getting a dose of laughing gas, grab a bite and a few pints to boot.
