The growing number of new vehicles and new drivers in Malaysia has contributed significantly to an increased rate for accidents and fatalities.
According to Bernama, statistics from the Road Transport Department stated the number of new vehicles was up from 21,401,269 in 2011 to 22,702,221 in 2012. The number of new drivers used to be 12,763,452 in 2011 and in 2012; the number went up to 13,303,843.
Between 2011 and 2012, there is an increase of 40 fatalities due to road accidents. Bernama wrote that Bukit Aman’s statistic reported an increase of 13,677 accidents between 2011 (448,746) and 2012 (462,423).
From the fatalities report, motorcycle riders or pillion riders made up the biggest number of deaths with 4,178 cases. Deaths involving car drivers and passengers are 1,435 and pedestrians cases are 530.
With such a high number of people meeting with accidents, what do you think should be done to bring the number down? Intensive road safety campaigns?
