The US Embassy of Kuala Lumpur issued a security alert last Friday, Jan 12, on The Beach Club located on Jalan P Ramlee, KL, informing US citizens that the place is off-limits to all personnel under Chief of Mission authority.
The cause of the alert was by a coordinated drink-spiking event targeting foreigners in 2015. The embassy also noted that the prohibition was not based on one singular event, but developed after a careful review of historical events associated with The Beach Club.
Consequently, Malaysia’s Deputy Home Minster Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the alert was “uncalled for” and that the embassy should have tipped off the authorities to conduct an investigation.
He also said that it reflected badly onto the country’s night club scene.
“There is (really) no need to issue the travel advisory. Just tip off the police, (as) they can take action if there is a complaint. Such information can adversely impact the country’s image… in fact, it implies that all nightclubs in KL, and Malaysia are doing the same.
“However, I will instruct the police to look into the matter and investigate if there are complaints from the victims. Sometimes, the victims did not lodge a (police) report but discussed it on social media and so on. Perhaps, this could be the reason why the US Embassy is concerned about the matter,” said Nur Jazlan.
Meanwhile, the embassy advised citizens to:
- Avoid The Beach Club located at 924, Jalan P Ramlee, Kuala Lumpur.
- Be aware of the surroundings.
- Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
- Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners.
- Make contingency plans to leave.
- Review your personal security plans
