When people hear the word “Kepong”, most think that it is a faraway place that’s difficult to access. But in actuality, it is only about 20 mins away from Kuala Lumpur, if traffic is being kind. Even if you feel that’s still a bit of a stretch to travel to, there are so many things to do there that will make up for it.
1. Forest Reserve Institute of Malaysia (FRIM)
FRIM is one of the more commonly known places in Kepong and plays host to various local flora and fauna. From waterfalls to hiking, FRIM can accommodate people of any fitness level. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, take the route up to the canopy walk. On the other hand, if you’re looking to relax with the sounds of nature playing in the background, a picnic by the waterfalls might be more your cup of tea.
2. Taman Botani FRIM
A rather hidden gem that’s known and frequented by local Kepongites, the Taman Botani FRIM or botanical gardens is joined to FRIM but located within the housing area next to it. From as early as 6am, people take their morning walks there. It can get pretty crowded! If the weather is accommodating, you’ll get the chance to watch the flowers bloom, fishes swimming in the lake, or even find a tortoise or two nibbling on fallen leaves. There are other hidden paths within the gardens, with one leading to a herbs and spices garden, and another leading into the hills where people can hike up part of the mountain.
3. Kepong Metropolitan Park
Another local favourite for a morning or evening jog, the Kepong Metropolitan Park is located at the Selayang exit of the MRR2 highway. It’s hard to miss as there are signs leading to the place, and if you’re passing by in the evening, the skies will be filled with kites! A popular spot for kite flying due to the wide open space at the park, families often spend their evenings there. Don’t have a kite? Not to worry! There are several kite stalls, and if kite-flying is not your thing, there’s always the option of a quick jog or cycle around the lake.
4. KL Tzu-Chi Jing Si Hall
Located along Jalan Kepong, the Tzu Chi Foundation is a Taiwanese international humanitarian and non-governmental organization with over 10 million members worldwide throughout 47 countries. The Jing Si Hall is one of their many bases for classes and to practice to become a volunteer with the foundation. Few know of this place, except for the volunteers themselves, but it is open to the public. Here, they have a zen cafe where guests are welcome to have a cup of coffee or tea in a quiet, relaxing place. In their shop, they also sell vegetarian foods such as flavoured-dehydrated rice. They also implement several recycling efforts to protect the environment. There are many other classes carried out here. To learn more, contact +603-6256 3800.
5. Desa Park City
A thriving area within Kepong, Desa Park City is known for their park, which allows dogs along the Waterfront, as well as to the eateries located along the lake. Many frequent the park in the evening or over the weekends with their furry friends for a nice day out. There are also bicycle lanes set up. One of the main rules here is to make sure that you clean up after your pooch if they do their business. Their latest addition, Plaza Arkadia, boasts eateries of all kinds – from coffee shops to fancy wine and dine restaurants as well as pubs with live band performances.
There’s something for everyone here in Kepong, so take the time and head on over to see what else the area has to offer.
