New Treats At China House

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

You might be forgiven for thinking that these are a new range of cakes – as China House, Penang’s arty café is famous for these. But these are treats of a different kind, more for the soul than the body.

During September there are two exhibitions in the Art Space above the main restaurant – Platform, a group show of young Malay artists, and Nomadic Life by Bike by a young Swiss couple, Celine and Xavier Pasche.

Platform comes straight from the Galeri Chandan in KL and, as the name suggests, is a showcase for emerging talent. I particularly enjoyed Ainurfatin Abd Majid’s work Loneliness where a solitary lamp post illuminating single window seemed to evoke feelings of aloneness and separation. Also of note is Fateen Ilani Kamarudin’s Railway Administration Buildings, which evokes the eclectic, exuberant colonial architecture of the heyday of Empire in spare monochrome.

Nomadic Life by Bike is an exhibition of photographs from an extraordinary three year journey from the shores of Lake Geneva to Penang. As the title suggests, they travelled by bicycle – 33,000 kilometres over some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in the world. They had many adventures and challenges which they share in an hour long presentation given every Saturday in September – 14th, 21st and 28th. Celine narrates their journey accompanied by Xavier’s gorgeous photographs. I found it inspiring as well as beautiful. A treat not to be missed.
