Malaysia’s electricity rates will go up by 14.98% or 4.99 sen to 38.53 sen per kWh, beginning 1st January 2014.
According to a report in the New Straits Times, the tariff in peninsular Malaysia would be up by 4.99 sen per kilowatt hour, and by five sen in Sabah and Labuan.
“The subsidy gradualisation will involve a 14.89% increase from 33.54 sen per kilowatt hour to 38.53 sen per kilowatt hour for the peninsula,” said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus Ongkill.
“Sabah and Labuan will see a 5 sen per kilowatt hour hike, or a 16.9% increase, from 29.52 sen per kilowatt hour to 34.52 sen per kilowatt hour.”
Sarawak will not be affected by the tariff hike. This is because its power supply and distribution are managed by state-owned Sarawak Energy. Dr. Ongkill also said that 70.67% of consumers in Peninsular Malaysia and 62% in Sabah will not have to worry about the tariff hike as they will not be affected if they use the electricity at a rate of, or lower than, 300kWh a month.
