The import and sale of Jimi Hendrix’s 1967 album cover is banned in Malaysia because of its cover art, which is said to be an insult to Hindus. The album, Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Axis: Bold as Love, was banned because the cover art depicts Hendrix and his band mates as various forms of Lord Vishnu in an appropriated Hindu design.  The album’s cover art has been banned for awhile now, but the news was highlighted again recently when the Penang Hindu Association demanded an apology from the organiser of the Big Bad Wolf sale for displaying the poster of the album cover at one of its book fairs.

Following that, the ban of two more albums by David Bowie (Diamond Dogs) and Bob Marley (Kaya) was brought to light, due to the nature of the album’s cover art.

*Kaya is a Jamaican slang for ganja.

Bowie’s Diamond Dog album cover art shows a picture of Bowie’s face on the body of a dog, while Marley’s album had a picture of a burning joint of ganja on the back cover of the album. Both albums’ cover art was banned awhile back as well.

According to the Malay Mail’s interview with the supervisor at Mid Valley’s Rock Corner outlet, the albums usually arrive with just the box and the CDs. The covers and posters are usually seized before reaching the stores.
