More and more Nigerians are entering Malaysia to operate sophisticated online scams on American women, to exploit them of their savings worth hundreds of thousands of US dollars, as reported by US officials.
According to a report on Reuter’s, these con men (from Nigeria) are entering Malaysia with student visas. They then take advantage of Malaysia’s progressive banking system and excellent broadband Internet services which helps them to easily set up accounts, manage international transfers, and operate the dating websites which they use to deceive their victims (American women).
Complaints about the online scams have increased to 80%, with an estimate of a dozen new cases received every week, said Tim Scherer, the US Embassy’s consul general. They estimated the loss to be at several million dollars a year, with an average of tens of thousands of dollars by each victim in more than 600 cases a year.
