According to latest research to avoid the worst impact on our climate, global greenhouse emissions will have to drop to net-zero by mid-century. The last UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019 that converged with leaders from around the world put focus on measures for reduction in greenhouse emissions, saw several countries, states, cities, and companies pledge their commitment to do so.
Among them was Etihad Airways, who pledged to attain a “minimum target” of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Announcing their commitment at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2020, the international carrier also expressed their desire in contributing towards halving net emission levels by 2050.
This initiative is an addition to Etihad’s pledge in 2019 to drastically reduce single-use plastic on all flights by 80% by the end of 2022.
Spokesperson from Etihad commenting on their net-zero carbon emissions plan explained that the initiative will be carried out:
“through a mix of internal initiatives, collaboration with industry partners and adoption of a comprehensive program of relevant carbon offsets, to be developed with specific focus on the requirements of the UAE and markets served by the airline”.

Among other airlines who have also pledged to join the effort in reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050 were British Airways and Qantas.
