Anyone planning a New Year’s holiday along the East Coast of Malaysia might need to consider a change of plans.
As parts of West Malaysia grapple with the horrific aftermath of the pre-Christmas floods, the Meteorological Department of Malaysia (MetMalaysia) has released weather predictions from now until January 2, 2022 that involves the possibility of more heavy rains and a low-pressure weather system developing in the South China Sea.
According to MetMalaysia, it looks like continuous rain will likely pummel parts of eastern Sabah, western Sarawak, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan for the week of December 27, 2021 to January 2, 2022.
Coastal regions are to expect strong winds and rough seas in the waters of the South China Sea, including the Peninsula’s East Coast.
“Strong winds and rough seas are also forecasted in the waters of the South China Sea, including the waters of the East Coast of the Peninsula from today until Jan 1,” said the MetMalaysia statement posted on their site.
“Members of the public who plan to travel to these areas are advised to always be vigilant and sensitive to the latest information.”
VULNERABLE GROUPS ADVISED TO PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES WELL IN ADVANCE
The Ministry of Health (MoH) is urging vulnerable groups, including pregnant women whose due dates might be anytime soon, to start preparing for the unexpected such as more possible floods.
Expectant women who are due for labour soon, particularly those from flood-prone and low-lying areas, should report themselves to the nearest health authorities.
“They must bring along their pregnancy examination card, personal belongings such as sanitary pads, essential items for their baby, and medical supplies,” said the ministry.
The MoH also advised patients with chronic diseases who are undergoing treatments to have with them their medical record booklet, personal belongings, and medical supplies in the event of an evacuation.
The ministry further said that families of bed-ridden patients and haemodialysis patients should evacuate these patients to other locations for their safety.
“Do contact the health office for further advice. And always comply with the evacuation order issued by the authorities,” added MoH.
