The 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on Monday, March 13 and will be hosted by celebrity talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
Oscar season started months ago, and speculations over the nominees were finally put to rest when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the proud contenders on Tuesday, January 24.
Announced by actors Allison Williams (M3GAN) and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), ABC’s televised rollout turned high-profile contenders into Oscar nominees, following a contentious race that included everything from prestige gems (Everything Everywhere All at Once, TÁR, The Fabelmans) and major blockbusters (Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water) to late-breaking international dramas like All Quiet on the Western Front.
A24’s multiverse epic Everything Everywhere All at Once led the nominations list with 11 overall appearances in key categories, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu).
Michelle Yeoh is the first Southeast Asian and first Malaysian to be nominated for an Academy Award following her recent Golden Globe win for Best Actress in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Oddsmakers have Yeoh holding the second-best odds to bag the coveted statue, behind Cate Blanchett for her turn in TÁR.
Aside from Asian representation being at the forefront of awards season for the very first time, the heartwarming comeback stories of Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Brendan Fraser (The Whale) has viewers and fans all over the world rooting for these two brilliant performers who have battled decades of ostracization within the industry. Their life-changing performances have garnered so much support and praise from cinema lovers everywhere, segueing them directly into receiving multiple awards over the last few months. Hollywood icon Jamie Lee Curtis also celebrated her first Oscar nomination (Best Supporting Actress) for her turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
