The tournament not only celebrated sports and athleticism, but fostered a greater understanding of history, cultures, and foods from around the region, too!
In February, Oasis International School (OIS) hosted the inaugural ACSC II Tri-Sport Tournament. Over 200 students from international schools across Asia traveled to OIS to participate in this tournament. Over a span of 96 hours, teams competed in a total of 78 games across three different sports – basketball, volleyball, and soccer.
In addition to this remarkable feat on the athletic surface, student athletes demonstrated growth in cultural understanding and servant leadership. On one of the first tournament days, students and coaches were dropped off in the middle of Kuala Lumpur and challenged to learn about Malaysia’s rich history, culture, religions, and foods through an interactive scavenger hunt.
Later in the week, student athletes led a half-day camp at OIS for over 100 students from Elom Academy and Al-Ikhlas School, two refugee schools in Kuala Lumpur.
During the tournament, students purchased four of their meals from PichaEats, a social enterprise that provides financial stability to the refugee community by training and employing refugee chefs so their children can receive an education. By participating in the tournament and purchasing meals from PichaEats, ACSC II schools helped 80% of Picha families cover their minimum expenses this month!
Not only this, student athletes used their free time in between games to partner with Empower Independence, a project led by OIS students, to create over 300 crochet pom-poms. These pom-poms will be used by a team at OIS to create crochet flower bouquets. The team hopes to make over RM1,500 in profits from the sale of these bouquets which will go towards funding entrepreneurship projects with Han International School students.
It took every member of the OIS community to make it meaningful and successful. OIS is an extraordinary place to learn and play, not only for our students but also for hundreds of other students from around the world.
