The Expat Wine Dinner at Fresca Mexican Kitchen & Bar @The Gardens

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The evening rain was just beginning to make an appearance as a group of expats found their way to a little corner of Mexico that sits within The Gardens Mall. Fresca, a fairly new face on the restaurant scene, promised an evening of authentic Mexican cuisine for our January Wine Dinner, and it didn’t disappoint.

Glasses of wine were quickly distributed to the guests upon arrival – Duncan Creek Rosé Zinfandel was the tipple of the moment – while canapés gave a taste of what was to come: little bites of nachos and dashes of guacamole.

Once seated at one of the long tables in this wood-panelled, sombrero-adorned restaurant, guests were served their Cauliflower Soup (Sopa de Coliflor), which was swiftly followed by a choice of mains. Both the fish and the beef were equally sought after, and the former – Pescado a la Veracruzana – was a specialty from Veracruz that paired delightfully with the Duncan Creek Classic White. The Carne Asada a la Tampiquena – that’s beef tenderloin with enchiladas to those with rusty Spanish – came with a taste of Eagle Ridge Merlot, and plates and glasses were soon emptied.

A truly Mexican ending arrived in the Flan de la Casa, and this crème caramel was a wobble of custard perfection that disappeared swiftly, leaving mouths free to continue conversing with new friends.
