NOW THAT YOU’VE BEEN IN MALAYSIA FOR SO MANY YEARS, YOUR VISITORS FROM HOME ARE GETTING TIRED OF THE SAME OLD SIGHTS. WHERE CAN YOU TAKE THEM IN OR CLOSE TO KL THAT WILL STILL SURPRISE AND IMPRESS THEM? HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR THOSE WITH AN OPEN MIND.
CRASH AN INDIAN WEDDING
It doesn’t take long to realise that Indian weddings are a world away from the solemn, competitive affairs of the West. The rule seems to be the more the merrier, so find a friend of a friend to take you along; there is no better way to understand a little more about the fascinating rituals, admire clothing and jewels that glitter in every colour of the rainbow, and eat some seriously delicious food!
FALL IN THE SWAMP ON CRAB ISLAND
Well, the idea is to not fall in the swamp, but as children growing up on Pulau Ketam – or Crab Island – learn to ride their bikes around this floating village, they invariable end up crashing into the marshy surroundings. Take a ferry from Port Klang to this little fishing village, rent a bike to explore, and then enjoy a fresh seafood meal at one of the many little restaurants.
DRESS IN A PINK ROBE AT PUTRAJAYA MOSQUE
Driving out to Putrajaya may feel like a hassle when you live in KL, but a day in this planned city can actually be quite a lot of fun. Aside from taking a river cruise, an activity worth partaking in is a tour of the stunning mosque, although non-Muslims will need to don a natty pink robe before entering.
WAT CHETAWAN
It may be an unusual sight in Malaysia, but this Thai temple in Taman Jaya (Petaling Jaya) has long been an important part of the surroundings. Completed in 1962 after financial support from the King of Thailand and the Malaysian Government, this temple is as ornate as any found in neighbouring Thailand and will keep photographers happy for an afternoon.
BURN OFF THE NASI LEMAK IN SHAH ALAM
Shah Alam Agricultural Park (Bukit Cahaya) must be one of the area’s best kept secrets, and while it may look a little tired, this large park is a wonderful facility for those aching for a piece of the great outdoors. Rent a bicycle and take to the tarmac paths that crisscross this 1258-hectare area, or visit the SkyTrex Adventure Park and navigate the canopy 22m in the air!
