Penang, known affectionately as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, is located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, by the Strait of Malacca.
It comprises two parts – Penang Island, where the capital city, George Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is located, and Seberang Perai on the mainland. The state of Penang is bordered by Kedah to the north and east, and Perak to the south. The state’s population is 1,663,000 according to the 2015 census.
In 2009, Penang attracted 5.96 million tourists, thanks to its rich heritage, multicultural society and its food, beaches, parks and shopping. The island is listed in Patricia Schultz’s best-selling ‘1,000 Places to See Before You Die’ book.
