What were your impressions of Malaysia before you came? How have they changed, if indeed they have?
I first came here around six years ago and had never been to Asia; I thought it would be totally foreign and much less developed than it was – I remember being amazed to see TGI Fridays! Now, I love the mix of old and new and the different cultures; there’s always something new to find.
If you had to pick a sound, a smell, a taste or a touch to describe Malaysia, what would it be?
A combination of all: walking down Jalan Alor at night with the sounds, smells and, of course, taste of all the delicious food!
What are the three things you like most about living in Malaysia?
Firstly, the lifestyle is very different from the life I would have if I was still teaching in London. Secondly, I like the travel opportunities. Thirdly, I like the fact that everyone here seems to be constantly in holiday mode.
What are three things you dislike about living in Malaysia?
I dislike the traffic jams, and how people walking insanely slowly and then stop right in front of you, especially on escalators! I can’t think of a third.
Name three places you would take an overseas visitor.
I would take them to as many different restaurants as possible, to the Skybridge of the Petronas Towers, and down to Chinatown.
Name three typical weekend activities you enjoy.
Weekends are usually going to the gym/running, I also like to travel or just hang out with friends.
What’s your favourite restaurant and bar in Malaysia?
Hard to pick a restaurant, but I love The Albion and Nagasari Curry House (two very different experiences!). My favourite bar would have to be Havana.
What memory that encapsulates life as an expat here in Malaysia will stay with you once you’ve left?
The people: both the locals who are hospitable, friendly, and always pleased (and sometimes amazed) that you love living in their country, and the amazing expats here who are so friendly,welcoming, and unpretentious.
