The amount of crime in Penang has decreased this year since 2011. According to a report from Bernama, Penang now registers a drop in its crime index with 19.2% between January and July this year, with a total of 4,645 cases recorded. Last year’s number was 5,750.
“The drop in crime rates in Penang is due to the increase in police presence in crime-prone areas,” said State Police Chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob.
According to the Police Chief, the increase in police presence was possible with the cooperation of auxiliary policemen, Police Volunteer Reserve and members of the Volunteer Patrol Scheme.
We would like to remind expat’s that although there is a drop in the crime index, it is still advisable to exercise caution, especially when walking in car parks, driving late at night and walking on the street.
