Badminton is a famous sport in Malaysia, which explains the pressure Badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei was under at the London Olympics. When he walked away with a Silver medal, the devastated player apologized to his country, adding that his biggest regret was not hearing Malaysia’s national anthem played at the Olympics. The nation immediately sent an outpouring of motivational and congratulatory message to the humble player. Hundreds even showed up at the airport to welcome back their national hero.
No one expected that Malaysia would shine at any other sport. So it was a pleasant surprise when national diver Pandelela Riong, a Sarawakian, won the bronze medal at the Women’s 10-meter platform diving semi-final.
“I am so proud of becoming the first Malaysian from outside badminton to win a medal at the Olympics for Malaysia,” the 19 year old was quoted as saying. By winning the bronze medal, Malaysia is now up to the 52nd spot.
