What brought you to Malaysia and how long have you been here?
My Dad’s job moved him to KL so we moved here when I was 3 years old. It’s been 14 years since then and I’ve completed my secondary education.
How easily did you adapt to living in a new country?
I didn’t have any problems regarding school as I started and finished both my primary and secondary education here in Malaysia. Nostalgia would occasionally kick in, though, causing us to reminisce about the joyful times we experienced back home in Singapore.
What three things do you wish you could change about Malaysia?
I wish the constant traffic congestion, which worsens when there’s a heavy downpour, could be better controlled. I wish we could put a stop to the pungent smells and dirty areas we frequently come across. The public transport is not great, making it difficult to move around KL without a car. I wish the locations of bus stops and train stations were made more convenient.
How long do you think you will stay?
I’ve been here for 14 years and I’m moving back to Singapore soon to complete my A levels.
Name three typical weekend activities that you enjoy.
I frequently take part in netball tournaments during the weekends. I enjoy going to the movies at Mid Valley Megamall or lazing about at home or catching up on homework on a rainy day.
Do you frequent any restaurants offering food of your homeland?
There are several hawker stalls in Bangsar selling my favourite Singapore mee goreng.
Do you own property here?
No, as I’m a student, but my parents and I live in a house in Bangsar.
Are most of your friends Malaysians or expats?
I usually find myself in the company of Chinese Malaysians, but I do have a couple of expat friends from Japan, South Africa, and Canada.
What is your favourite Malaysian food?
My favourite would be roti canai. It pleases my tummy anytime and I eat it almost every Saturday morning for breakfast!
What one memory will you always treasure when/if you come to leave Malaysia?
I wouldn’t forget my trip to Melaka with my parents, where we celebrated my 8th birthday by the seaside.
