What brought you to Malaysia?
This is my third time living in Malaysia. My father’s work brought my family to Malaysia when I was 3 years old for one year, and then when I was 13 years old for six years. Then I came to KL for work in 2004 until now. In total, I have been in Malaysia for 15 years.
What were your impressions of Malaysia before you came?
When I first came to Malaysia, I remember being surrounded by lots of green and trees, and shopping at the pasar malams. Now,
there are so many cars, condominiums, and shopping malls!
How easily did you adapt to living in a new country?
Since I’ve lived overseas most of my life, I adapt to a new country very easily. I love meeting new people, finding my own “oasis,” learning about a new language and culture, and, of course, discovering yummy foods!
What are the three things you like most about living in Malaysia?
I like that it is multicultural, it’s summer all year, and I love the food!
What three things do you wish you could change about Malaysia?
The traffic, the issue of security/safety, and education.
Do you frequent any restaurants offering food of your homeland?
Nope. When we miss Japanese food, we cook at home.
Are most of your friends Malaysians or expats?
Both. Many of the social events I go to have a mix of Malaysians and expats at them, and I love meeting people from all over the world. That said, my Malaysian friends always know the best local places to eat!
What do you miss most about your home country?
The cherry blossoms, the hot springs, the seasonal fresh sashimi, and the fabulous customer service.
What is your favourite Malaysian food?
I can’t choose just one! Some of my favourites are kuih, cendol, bak kut teh, steamboat, chilli crab, butter prawns, roti pisang and pan mee.
