The five-year freeze on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia has been lifted, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the employment of workers between Malaysia and Bangladesh.
The first batch of workers from Bangladesh is expected to arrive by January 2013.
However, the New Straits Times reports that hiring these workers will be limited to the plantation sector, and it would be done through a government to government arrangement, or respective agencies designated by both governments.
This will effectively eliminate third party involvements (agents, outsourcing companies, direct recruitment by employers).
According to a comment by Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam to the daily, the government will monitor the progress of this new arrangement for three months before opening it up to other sectors and other countries.
“We want to evaluate the effectiveness of the process and procedures as well as the problems and challenges that might arise from its implementation. After three months, once we have the confidence, we will open the other sectors.”
