Those thinking of donating blood should do so with the National Blood Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Bernama reports that the centre usually needs blood from 400 to 450 donors daily to meet the demand in the Klang Valley.
According to Dr. Roshida Hassan, Director at the National Blood Centre, the blood was needed to meet the demand from government and private hospitals, which required about 3,000 units of blood a week. This includes all blood types; A, B, O and AB.
Each blood donation can save up to three lives, but the blood donated has a life expectancy of up to 42 days for red blood, five days for platelets and between two and three years for frozen plasma.
You can make a blood donation on Christmas day at the centre from 8am to 4pm. If you are going to be busy with celebrations, visit their website at www.pdn.gov.my to get information on its mobile blood donation campaign.
