The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), together with the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Development Council (KLTDC) has organized a thrice weekly, free heritage guided walk around Dataran Merdeka.
This new initiative was introduced to help promote the history and architecture of the city. The free guided walk starts this Saturday, 15 December 2012.
According to the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib, Dataran Merdeka was chosen as the main point because of the British Administration before Malaysia’s independence.
The tour will be conducted by professional tour guides, and takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, from 9.15am. The tour will last for two and a half hours, and will cover 11 heritage sites in the area.
Here is a list of some of the heritage sites included in the walk:
- The Sultan Abdul Samad Building which was built in 1894
- The former High Court Building from 1909
- The Federated Malay States Railway Station from 1905
- The old City Hall since 1896
- The Government Printing Office from 1898
- Chartered Bank (1919)
- St Mary Cathedral (1895)
- Royal Selangor Club (1884)
- The field where the British Union Jack was lowered and the flag of an independent federation of Malaya was raised for the first time on 31 August, 1957.
