One of the leading five-star hotels, the Crowne Plaza Mutiara, will be closing its doors today, after being in the business for 40 years. The New Straits Times reported that the closure was to give way for a multi-billion redevelopment project by Tradewinds Corporation.
The hotel was first launched in July 1972, by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein. It was initially known as KL Hilton under the Hilton Worldwide management.
It was renamed in 2004 to Mutiara Hotel following a takeover. Soon after that, it was taken over again by another management, Tradewinds Corporation Bhd, who rebranded the hotel to the Crowne Plaza Mutiara in 2008.
