Awareness on recycling is still low among Malaysians, says Datuk Adnan Md Ikhsan, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Federal Territories and Urban Well-being.
According to a report on Bernama, an estimated of 25,000 metric tonnes of waste was generated in Peninsular Malaysia in a single day, last year, of which only five per cent was recycled.
Datuk Adnan says that it is important for everyone, including organisations, to get involve in environmental programmes to implement a sustainable recycling activity to conserve the environment.
"It is a big challenge for us to achieve a comfortable and enhanced quality of life for the people, particularly for Federal Territories residents," he said.
Datuk Adnan did acknowledge that it wasn’t easy to change attitudes in society as old habits are hard to break.
