Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Following the tragic death of 13 elephants in a forest reserve in Tawau, the Sabah Wildlife department called for elephants to be categorised under a totally protected species. Although it has yet to be implemented.

Elephants are protected under the Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, but, they are not on the highest tier such as the orang utans, rhinos, sunbears, proboscis monkeys and clouded leopards.

If one is caught killing a totally protected species, they are liable to a compulsory jail term of six months to five years. Those caught killing elephants are usually fined up to RM50,000 or jailed up to five years.

According to the New Straits Times, the dead elephants were found within the family's habitat measuring about 400 sq km in the area near the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve which sits between the Danum Valley and Maliau Basin Conservation areas from 29 December 2012 to 30 January 2013.
