Pay a visit to the Sabah State Museum and view photos of the United States Peace Corps service over 21 years in Malaysia since 1962.
This exhibition will provide an opportunity to educate the public on the importance of volunteerism and how it benefits humanity.
According to Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun, “the US Peace Corps showed how much the Americans cared for smaller nations during that time. They have left a lasting legacy particularly in terms of education," he said during a hand-over of the exhibition titled "Peace Corps in Malaysia – 50 Years of Enduring Friendship, 1962-2012" to the museum.
According to Datuk Masidi, the arrival of the Peace Corps in Malaysia, especially in Sabah, was timely as the country was still recovering from the Japanese occupation which ended in 1942.
According to Bernama, US Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Paul W. Jones said although the Peace Corps volunteers were no longer serving in Malaysia, the friendship established between both Malaysia and the United States have carried through till this day.
There are over 100 photos of the Peace Corps efforts in east Malaysia on display. Currently, the Sabah State Museum are working on obtaining more photos that were taken specifically in Sabah.
