You may think it’s alright to park illegally for just a few minutes as you run an errand, instead of parking at proper designated spots which are further away. Well, you might want to rethink your decision.
According to a report in the New Straits Times, the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP), have plans to begin clamping and towing away cars parked illegally around the entire island.
This is because the council has received countless complaints from the public on vehicles that were parked indiscriminately, especially in crowded public places.
According to the council’s secretary, Ang Aing Thye, the council has issued many parking summonses, more than usual, which means that people are still violating traffic regulations.
"The MPPP is authorised to clamp and tow away any illegally parked cars anywhere on the island, but the council has not taken their enforcement operations that far due to manpower limitation," says Ang.
The council will need to beef up its team of 160 officers to at least 200, before they can began taking action against those parked illegally. And by taking action, they mean clamping and towing away vehicles.
Clamped cars will have to pay RM50 to the council to remove the clamps, while towed vehicles will have to pay RM150 for towing charges. A daily storage fee of RM5 will be charged to those who delay collecting their towed cars.
