Name: Gareth Eynon
Home Country: UK (Wales)
Industry/Job: Headmaster
Marital Status: Married with one daughter
Other Countries you have lived: Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Thailand,
Malaysia (twice previous to this appointment)

What brought you to Malaysia?
I was appointed as Headmaster of Epsom College in Malaysia, and took up the post in September 2011.

What were your impressions of Malaysia before you came?
Having worked in Malaysia twice previously, I had a reasonable sense of what to expect. I have been very pleasantly surprised by what seem huge improvements to road networks in KL; I find it so much easier to get about this time around.

How easily did you adapt?
I have lived and worked outside the UK now since 1995 and have always been excited by the experience of moving to a new country. I have found Malaysia a relatively easy place to adjust to. When starting any new job overseas, a multitude of emotions are experienced. Usually if you come expecting highs and lows, delights and challenges, then the experience will be an adventure you will you remember with affection.

What are the three things you like most about living in Malaysia?
I love Penang and I enjoy nothing better than being by the coast, so I hope to experience further the delights of Malaysia’s coastline during my time in the country. I enjoy the cultural events – part of the reason for moving overseas to work has been to experience different cultures and lifestyles. I also like the dramatic electrical storms and the rain – it reminds me of Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales!

What three things do you wish you could change about Malaysia?
I think it would be presumptuous to comment. As a guest of any country, we are in a fortunate and privileged position and should be respectful of that. Why should Malaysia change according to me?

What do you enjoy doing at the weekend?
I am passionate about art and try to remain as active as possible in the production of my own work. Whenever I have the chance I enjoy playing my guitar, which I tackle with enthusiasm if not sophistication! I also cherish the time I spend with my family. A fourth would be a passion for sports, particularly football.

Do you frequent any restaurants offering food of your homeland?
Not so often… there’s only so much cheese on toast you can eat. I tend to favour Thai food, or Indian, or Italian, or French, or….

What do you miss most about your home country?
I miss the national identity, the language, the climate, the landscape, walks in the mountains and along the coastline… shall I continue?
