Underground Drain Malfunction Cause of Floods in IOI Mall

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

After much speculation over the actual cause of Monday’s flash floods in Puchong, reports have finally confirmed that a malfunction at one of the three underground water channels along the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) is the cause for the flash floods.

Apparently, one of the channels malfunctioned and was unable to accommodate the rising quantity of water due to the heavy downpour. The Meteorological Department said that 68 millimeters of rain was recorded.

The other contributing factor was the low-lying position of IOI Mall compared to Bandar Puteri Puchong on the opposite side of the highway.

According to Bernama, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) have sent a request to the Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad, the contractor of the Light Rail Transit track in the area, to enlarge the existing drain to prevent future flash floods from happening. This is expected to be completed within two months.

On the other hand, another detailed study will be conducted by LITRAK, Prasarana Negara Berhad and LDP. The findings should be completed in two weeks’ time.
