Johor police have set up an interactive kiosk which links to the Johor police HQ. The interactive kiosk is located in the heart of the city centre, at the Jalan Wong Ah Fook-Jalan Station junction. The public can use the kiosk to call the police in case of an emergency.
This is the second kiosk of its kind in Malaysia. The first is in Penang.
According to the New Straits Times, the kiosk is part of a project (safe city program) to enhance Johor’s image and security. The project is said to complement other existing security measures in Johor such as, CCTV cameras, safety signboards, road bumpers, pedestrian paths, lamp posts and safety mirrors.
According to Johor Bahru’s City Council Mayor, Burhan Amin, thanks to the city’s previous security measures, the crime rate in Johor has gone down 10% in just one year. Burhan also said the council hopes to set up more such kiosk in strategic places around the city.
The kiosk costs RM120,000 and was funded by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, according to the New Straits Times.
To use the kiosk in emergency situations, one will have to stand close to the kiosk, press a button and speak directly into its intercom, which is directly linked to the Johor police headquarters. A police officer will then correspond with the person through the intercom, and a police team will be sent to the kiosk immediately.
Best not to use the kiosk for prank calls though as it is monitored by a CCTV camera, unless you want to end up in a legal case.
