The controversial ban on Indian movie Vishwaroopam has finally been lifted, and allowed to be re-screened in Malaysian cinemas after a month-long hiatus.
The movie which first began screening in cinemas early this month, was banned following complains that certain contents of the movie were sensitive to some communities. Vishwaroopam was also banned in Tamil Nadu (India) and Singapore.
After a long-hiatus, the movie was approved for screening in Tamil Nadu, and Singapore followed suit. Malaysia is the third country to lift the ban. The movie began screening again yesterday, 27 February, with a cut of less than two minutes.
Critics believe that the temporary ban and controversy has made the movie one of the most successful films in recent years. Although the movie has been released on illegal dvd’s, most movie goers (fans especially) will still op to watch Vishwaroopam on the big screen.
Vishwaroopam is a spy thriller about an Indian intelligence officer who infiltrates the al-Qaeda movement in Afghanistan. The wife decides to hire a detective to find out some dirt on her husband as she intends on ending the relationship, and that is when she discovers some surprising secrets in her husband’s closet. The movie stars legendary Indian actor, Kamal Hassan, who also directs the movie.
The movie is currently showing in Lotus Five Star cinema in Petaling Jaya.
