Below are updates on Lahad Datu from 13 March 2013
For the past one month, news portals have been buzzing with news of Lahad Datu. Along with the facts, there are many negative rumours circulating that Malaysia is at war. To clear things up, we have compiled a timeline of activities that has been happening since day one at Lahad Datu. This timeline will be updated as often as possible with facts from various valid news portals in Malaysia.
13 March, after a 48-hour lull, another clash between the Sulu intruders and the Malaysian security forces broke out, leading to the death of one Malaysian soldier and two Sulu fighters. This took place in Sungai Nyamuk, near Tanjung Batu. Another soldier was also killed when the army truck he was traveling in met with an accident.
Thousands of people gathered at the airport to pay their respect as the remains of the two Malaysian soldiers were flown home.
Security forces say they are confident that the leader of the Sulu intruders, Agbimuddin Kiram, who they believe is the brother of the self-proclaimed Sulu sultan, Jamalul Kiram III, is still within the Felda Sahabat area.
The area affected by Sulu intruders is known as Gugusan Labian, which is said to have about 10 villages within. The operation, Ops Daulat, by the Malaysian security forces was successful in cleaning up all traces of the representatives of the Sultan of Sulu in Kampung Tandou. The operation is still on-going at three villagers; Kampung Tanjung Batu, Sungai Nyamuk and Sungai Bilis.
Also, a video which shows a man being tortured has been circulating on social media sites. Supposedly, the video is of a Sulu fighter torturing a man from the Malaysian security force. But, according to reports, the video was not shot at Lahad Datu, or anywhere in Malaysia. According to Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, the video depicts a man from a foreign country being tortured somewhere overseas, not Malaysia. If you have seen the video, please do not spread it as it is false news.
