What brought you to Malaysia?
I came initially on a short assignment, which was then followed by a permanent transfer two years ago.

What were your first impressions of Malaysia?
I was struck by the friendly people and the relaxed atmosphere, and nothing has changed over the years. After many years working in the Middle East, KL is a welcome change. The people are generally friendly and helpful.

What do you dislike about living in Malaysia?
The biggest disappointment here is the lack of respect for the environment. A recent visit to Melaka and Port Dickson emphasized this; it really pains me to see the mass of plastic bottles and polystyrene containers littered all along what would be a fantastic beautiful stretch of beach. The streets of KL are also full of rubbish and the air pollution from the older buses is plain for all to see. There needs to be much more awareness.

What do you enjoy about Malaysia?
The climate is good and fairly consistent all year round, but that has a down side in that it is never very different, except for the rainy season with the spectacular storms it brings.

What do you like to do at the weekend?
During the weekend I like to relax, go for a walk, or see a concert by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. My favorite restaurant is Healey Mac’s in Bukit Bintang.

Have you bought property in Malaysia?
No we haven’t bought property here, it’s too expensive.

Has Malaysia changed much during your time here?
Unfortunately I haven’t seen any change or improvement in the two years I have been here. It’s still just as good as it was when I first arrived. An improvement I’d like to see is better policing of the traffic rules, especially in relation to the motorbikes!

How long do you think you will stay?
I anticipate staying here in Malaysia for another four to five years.
