The Forbes list of the world’s richest people includes 14 Malaysian billionaires, up from 11 a year ago. Robert Kuok, the owner of the Shangri-La hotel group, among many other businesses, heads the list with a fortune estimated at US$12.5 billion. Ananda Krishnan, who is the major shareholder in Maxis and MEASAT (Malaysia East Asia Satellite), which beams down ASTRO, also features on the list.
Another survey by a Chinese magazine claimed there were 1,453 billionaires around the world and that Asia had more than any other continent with 608, followed by North America (440), then Europe with 324. In terms of countries, the USA topped the list with 408, followed by China (317).
