Oscar-winning art director, Roger Christian, who also worked on Star Wars, is making a movie in Sabah about the Sandakan Death March.

The infamous Sandakan Death March, which took place during World War II, saw the death of 1000 British and Australian soldiers.

The movie is scheduled to begin shooting in October 2013, and is estimated to cost around RM15.2mil.

To prepare for the movie, Christian had apparently watched various documentaries made about the Death March and learned how the Japanese army forced thousands of emaciated prisoners of war to walk for 140km from Sandakan to Ranau where many died along the way. Christian also spoke to various Kadazandusun indigenous people who had witnessed the Death march, especially those who tried to help the prisoners.

The movie –which does not have a title yet –will tell the story of the Death March from a local perspective.

The movie is in collaboration with Finas (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia).
