Spotify Fever Hits Malaysia

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Commercial music streaming service provider Spotify finally hit Malaysia earlier this week. Other than Malaysia, Spotify was also recently launched in Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Iceland.

Spotify was launched in 2008 and predominantly operates in Western countries such as the U.S., Germany and the U.K. It is a free on-demand music streaming service where music lovers can pay to listen to music with preference from any device any time.

How it works is that Spotify strikes a royalty deal with recording companies to allow them to legally stream free music. 70% of the revenue from Spotify will then go to the companies who still hold the rights. The revenue, of course, comes from advertisements.

Piracy has become a big problem for music makers these days and it doesn’t look like it will be a thing of the past anytime soon. But with Spotify, one has the option of streaming all their music for free legally (with some limitations), or they can pay for a premium account which is only RM14.90 a month. This is considerably cheaper compared to Singapore where the charge is S$9.90. The premium account is great value for those serious about their music. Premium users who pay will be able to enjoy Spotify’s mobile application and get functions like offline caching so they can store songs in their devices to play without an internet connection. Free users won’t be able to enjoy this but they can still listen to music for free.

Currently, Spotify has about 24 million active users and 6 million paying subscribers. It is now available in 28 markets worldwide.

Sign up with Spotify now or start listening to your favourite songs for free!
