Lynas Corporations are working on a proposal to recycle radioactive wastes by the Lynas Kuantan plant into compost, gypsum and road construction materials.
According to Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Md Diah, the proposal is now in the research and development phase. The outcome of the proposal will depend on the evaluation and confirmation by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board.
“The Lynas plant will have 3 types of wastes – Water Leach Purification, Neutralised Underflow and Flue Gas Desulphurization.
“In the duration of the Temporary Operating Licence, all these residues must be discharged from Malaysia,” said Abu Bakar.
Abu Bakar also said that Flue Gas Desulphurization and Neutralised Underflow will most probably not be categorised as residues due to controlled radioactive amount.
Water Leach Purification will have to be melted and turned into a secure and stable form containing 1 Becquerrel per gram or less in density, for it to be discharged from Malaysia.
“However, the material is still under the supervision of Department of Environment (DOE) to be turned into road construction materials, for example,” said Abu Bakar
