The International New York Times recently featured a Malaysian doctor’s photography in an article, “Snapshots of Globalization’s First Wave” by Sunil S. Amrith, a history teacher of Birkbeck College in London.

The article featured on 11 January 2014 can be viewed on the New York Times website.

The doctor, Dr Ooi Cheng Ghee, is well known in Penang for his vivid photos of Penang’s Little India between 1979 and 1981.

Dr Ooi said the article in The International New York Times was good publicity for Penang as the state was mentioned a lot in the article. Dr Ooi’s book on his 160 photographs, “Portraits of Penang: Little India” were also highlighted in the article.

Dr Ooi, now 70, took up photography as a hobby at the age of 25. He still practices medicine at a clinic in Jelutong and he also still spends time taking photographs around Penang in his free time.
