Time to stock up on candles and torch lights as Sabah will be facing blackouts over the next few days. This is because of an interruption in the gas supply to two new power plants in Sabah.
According to an official from Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), they had been informed by Petronas that gas supply to both power plants in Kimanis would be temporarily stopped. The affected plants were the Kimanis Power Sdn Bhd and SPR Energy independent power producers, with a combined generation capacity of 300mW.
According to the SESB official, the utility firm had to enforce power cuts at various areas on a rotational basis, due to the power supply shortfall. Each power cut will last for about three hours during peak periods. Power supply to industries would also be affected.
