Malaysia is demanding immediate and unrestricted access to the crash site of MH17, as well as guaranteed safety for its officials and those of the joint international investigation team. Malaysia is also demanding that all human remains must be allowed to be recovered, identified and sent back home.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is also concerned that the international team are still unable to enter the crash site. So far, the only international body that had briefly managed to access the crash site are the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The crash site area is controlled by Pro-Russian separatist.
“The Ukrainian government has stated that it has been unable to establish a safe corridor to the crash site for the international team…and it can’t guarantee the safety of the international team in and around the crash site,” Liow said.
The international investigation team comprises of officials from the Netherlands, Malaysia, and Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and the United States’ National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The Malaysian team comprises of 133 officials and experts of search and recovery, forensic experts and technical and medical experts.
The Transport minister also stressed that he was deeply concerned that the sanctity of the crash site might have been severely compromised, despite reported comments by the leader of a separatist group that his group has not interfered with the crash site.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it is believed to have been hit by a surface-to-air missile last Thursday. The place carrying 298 people went down in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
