Get ready for the new regulations on tinting for car windscreens and windows beginning November 1st.

According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the new regulation states that the allowed visible light transmission (VLT) for the rear windscreen and rear passenger windows is at 30%, down from the current 50%. As for the front windscreen and the driver’s window, the VLT remains at 70% and 50%.

“The regulations are in line with international standards in many other countries,” said JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad. He also added that the new regulation applied to all vehicles in Malaysia, including imported units.

Those who fail to follow the new rules will be fined RM300. If the case was brought to court, motorists could face a fine of up to RM1, 000, two weeks jail, or both, under the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991.

Exemptions are only for vehicles used by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, sultans, the prime minister, deputy prime minister, chief ministers, Chief Justice and those in enforcement bodies such as the police and Customs Department.
