An international website, LondonCabs.co.uk has listed Kuala Lumpur city for having the worst taxi drivers, in the world!
Another website, Ratestogo, listed Kuala Lumpur as the third (city) in the world for having the worst taxi drivers, after Phnom Penh and Jakarta.
On Tuesday 2 October 2012, over 100 taxi drivers in Kuala Lumpur brought the city to a standstill to protest their working conditions. This protest, which took place between 3pm-7pm, was instigated by the introduction of the free GO-KL buses, which operate in the city centre. This according to the taxi drivers has affected their earnings.
The protest by the taxi drivers was also to voice out their grievances, such as being harassed by SPAD, the Land Public Transport Commission, and other issues.
Although admittedly there are responsible and trustworthy taxi drivers in Kuala Lumpur, and around Malaysia, many expats, tourist and even locals have complained time and time again against taxi drivers for refusing to use the meter, for overcharging them and taking a detour to hike up the meter.
According to reports in the local dailies, SPAD have agreed to look into all the issues raised by taxi drivers, and those who have complained against the taxi service in Malaysia. A meeting will be called soon with relevant parties to find a solution.
