Fancy paying a visit to the old Istana Negara (Palace) which used to be the residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Raja Permaisuri Agong and their children? Well, now you can! Visitors will soon be allowed to visit the rooms at the old Istana Negara, for the first time, beginning 1 February 2013. This is because the palace will be turned into a Royal Museum.
Based on a report on Bernama, the Throne Room of the Istana Negara had been opened for public viewing as the venue for the ‘Pameran Raja Kita’ (Our Monarchy Exhibition) since April last year.
"We had received a response from the public who wished to visit the interior of Istana Negara. Finally, the government decided to open the palace as a museum," said Datuk Ibrahim Ismail, Director-General of the Museums Department.
The two-storey palace has 22 rooms including bedrooms, offices, halls, dining halls and resting lounge. The old Istana Negara, according to history, was built in 1928, and was used as the royal residence until November 2011, when the new palace was built at the Jalan Duta Istana Negara Complex. The Royal Museum is expected to be open every day from 9am to 5pm.
