What brought you to Malaysia?
Interesting and meaningful work. An initial three month contract was renewed – that was eight years ago!
What do you like and dislike about living in Malaysia?
I like the friendly people and the amazing nature. I dislike how difficult it is to get around without a car.
What do you like to do at the weekend?
I like playing sports and then cooling off in the pool afterwards. I like doing photography, and I like cycling.
What are your favourite holiday destinations in Malaysia?
I like going to the Kelabit Highlands in Sarawak and experiencing the hunters and gatherers, and seeing the local customs (like the long ear lobes), all just two short flights away from KL. I like Cameron Highlands and Fraser’s Hill – they are nice, cool, and pretty. I also love diving at Sipadan – one of the top diving spots in the world.
Do you own property here?
Yes, in Changkat Bukit Bintang. It’s a lively area with lots of food choices. I’m a city person who likes to do everything by foot or bike once I’m home, and Changkat is a perfect area for that.
What do you miss most about your home country?
I miss the cold, fresh air and good newspaper journalism.
What advice would you give to a newly arrived expat?
Explore the amazing Malaysian nature and cultures as much as you can.
How long are you planning to stay?
I’m not planning to leave!
Is Malaysia a good place to do business in?
Yes, there is a boleh (can) spirit working here – a willingness to try new things. This is great for a green building consultant
like myself, as we are trying to set new standards for sustainable buildings.
